HOW COMMON IS DEATH BY SNAKE BITE?

Here is an interesting insight into how misconception and lack of education can lead to our snakes getting a bad reputation.

Have a read of the statistics on the image here, and feel free to share this information to your neighbours and friends in hopes of slowly educating others about our scaly friends.

Remember if you see a snake - call us immediately!

WHAT IF MY PET HAS BEEN BITTEN

BY A SNAKE?

Educate yourself on the signs to look out for as our furry friends can end up having a really bad day if encountering one of these scaly guys.

If you ever believe your pet may have been bitten by or encountered a snake, please take them to the closest vet as soon as possible!

There is no urgency to identify the snake or try to search for the snake/harm it.

How do I provide first aid for snake bites?

You should always provide emergency care if you or someone else is bitten by a snake — including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), if required.

Keep calm, and follow these steps:

  • Get the person away from the snake.

  • Ensure they rest and help them to stay calm.

  • Call triple zero (000) and ask for an ambulance.

  • Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage (see below).

  • Don’t wash the bite area — venom left on the skin can help identify the snake.

If you can’t use a pressure immobilisation bandage because the bite is on the trunk or stomach, apply constant, firm pressure.

Do not apply a tourniquet, cut the wound or attempt to suck the venom (poison) out.

St John Ambulance Australia has a quick guide to the first aid management of snake bites.

The Australian Red Cross also has a handy infographic on how to treat them.
